Are You Taking Care of Your Employees?

It may sound redundant to say but times have certainly changed, haven’t they? I remember the .com days, September 11th, the housing bust, as well as many other ups and downs that signify the power dynamic between employer and employee. For at least the past decade I think it is safe to say the employer has held the all the cards. Today, however, that is no longer the case. Employers and managers must learn to evolve in today’s workplace.
What do employees want?
- Compensation. Top talent wants to be paid what they are worth. Glassdoor, one of the world’s largest job and recruiting sites, released data earlier this year that shows 45% of employees changing jobs this year site salary for the top reason for leaving.
- Benefits. A 2017 article in the Harvard Business Review titled “The Most Desirable Employee Benefits” notes that in today’s hiring market a generous benefits package is essential for attracting and retaining top talent. Your organization may not be able to afford over the top perks like those at Google or Facebook but, a generous health care package shows employees that you care about them and their families as well as keeping talent productive by keeping them healthy.
- Work-life Balance. The fastest way to run an employee out the front door is by over-working them. The same Harvard Business Review article references an employee survey by Flexjobs showing that 88% of respondents value flexible hours, work from home options and more vacation time.
- Valuing Employees. Like everyone else, employees want to feel appreciated and valued. When employees are recognized for their hard work and successes are more likely to be more engaged at work. Offering employees opportunities for advancement and professional development will help you retain top talent.
