At work, a team effort can provide a multifaceted approach to problem-solving as well as creativity. A group of coordinated individuals can accomplish almost anything on the job. However, specific characteristics are essential for a committee, task force, or another group of employees to successfully form a leadership team and manage various essential projects. Throughout our many years of leadership here at GCE Strategic Consulting, we have built and worked within teams, and the below five traits are key essential when building teams within your business.

Trust

When bringing together a combination of individuals who may be very different from each other and offer differing perspectives, it is essential to establish a foundation of trust. Trust is achieved by assessing traits like reliability, confidentiality, and accountability in each member assigned to the group. Anyone who lacks in these areas may find acceptance difficult, and the entire group structure could be compromised. The team can begin building trust by carrying out individual tasks that contribute to a shared project. If each member follows through as expected, trust begins to form. Trust is earned, but every team member must display the basics of reliability and accountability to build trust within the team. Using tools, such as the Accountability Chart within your business will help your team built trust but ensuring everyone on the team knows what is expected of them.

Diversity

Diversity is a valuable element within any team. Members of the group who differ in gender, age, ethnic or racial background, and experience level can each bring a distinctive viewpoint to the group. As long as all members are qualified to perform the work assigned to the group, distinctions in background and identity may prove advantageous in discussing complex issues and bringing a variety of perspectives to each project.

Openness

Group members must be able to practice openness with each other. Keeping secrets or holding back essential facts can be detrimental not only to a project but also to the team’s ability to coordinate the different tasks assigned to individuals. Someone who is hesitant to speak up or who does not reveal all information about his or her work due to employee burnout can complicate issues and may lead to a communication disruption. All team members should agree to be transparent and open with each other, which helps to support the trust building feature. Openness within your functional teams is as essential as it is within your Level 10 team. Being transparent and open with each member during weekly and quarterly meetings will allow your teams to thrive.

Communication

In addition to qualities like trustworthiness and openness, a dynamic team must also be willing to communicate frequently and openly with each other and with other employees who are involved with the project. Timely progress reports and weekly team meetings allow the team to stay connected and update on project progress. Team members must be willing to ask questions, seek and share information, and contact other individuals as required to ensure everyone is informed. Strong team members that naturally take leadership roles will typically oversee the process of disseminating information. Your level ten team must be willing to communicate from the top down but also promote bottom-up communications to foster strong team dynamics.

Talent

Team development strategies typically try to assign certain kinds of talent to projects where it will do the most good. For example, someone who has excellent math skills may be just what a particular team needs to crunch numbers associated with profit margins and predicted losses to strategize for the next quarter. Assigning people to teams where they can put their skills to work is an integral part of team building to create well-rounded groups that can get things done in a complementary style. This approach also helps to reduce the burden on an individual who may be shouldering too much responsibility and experience employee burnout as a result.
