When !?*& Hits the Fan

It isn’t  “if” it’s “when”,  right? Regardless of how long you have been in a leadership position, I am sure you have seen a couple of crises. If you’ve been lucky enough so far to have had a crisis either in your business, your employees or with your customers, then you understand. If you haven’t had a crisis yet, let’s talk about how to be ready. 

Crises come in all different shapes and sizes, some include:

  • Financing falling through
  • A top talent leaving the company
  • Lawsuit or threaten of one
  • Largest customer leaving
  • Someone actually getting hit by a bus

If you have been in a leadership position for more than 10 years, we know you have some of these crisis.

The first thing to know is that you need to expect the unexpected. “Rule Number 1,” according to Jamie Moldafsky, CMO of Wells Fargo, “is that you don’t get to pick your crisis. You have to be ready.” Brian Irving, former CMO of Hampton Creek, concurs: “Your crisis is not the one you think it’s going to be.” We suspect that Skittles probably thought their crisis risk was more likely to come from a food safety problem than from campaign tweets. Others like Nordstrom and Oreo have similarly found themselves pulled unexpectedly into political debates. Regardless of the cause, the important thing is to have the right people, data, tools, process, and mindset to handle whatever might come your way.”  You can find the complete article here.
