Are You a Visionary or an Integrator?
Doing What You Do Best
There is an excellent matrix for working through what you are good at and what you like to do. I am sure that you have seen it:
Here is a little exercise that takes just a few minutes – again, you probably have done this at least once.
But we take our blood pressure many times in our lives and this sort of like that.
Step 1: Write out all the tasks, responsibilities, roles, and To Dos that you do. Take some time to look through your calendar and task lists to refresh your memory. Be sure to include what you should be doing (especially if you know that you are not).
Step 2: Take each of those and put them into the appropriate box.
Step 3: Stare at your work for a while.
Result: Green and Blue for Me!
Congratulations! You are doing what you do best! You are well suited to your role, or you have found ways to tailor it to your strengths. But are you missing something? Are there things that you are responsible for that you are just ignoring or forgetting? One is far more likely to overlook tasks in yellow and red.
Result: Yellow and Red – Oh My!
Well, at least you know that you have some soul searching to do. There are far better resources for managing this situation than anything I could write.
Now Classify Them
There is a Step 4: classify all the tasks – regardless of the color of the quadrant - with a “V” or an “I.” Are these tasks more “V for Visionary” tasks or “I for Integrator” tasks? You will quickly find out which role you are more comfortable with. If you are equally comfortable, you are one of the rare lucky ones who can balance the Visionary and Integrator roles.
If you have a lot of “I for Integrator” in yellow and red, then you need help. A Fractional Integrator may be the person that you need to tip the balance on your matrix.
